CASE STUDY: MIZZOUREC SERVICES & FACILITIES
Best part of your Mizzou day and your first choice for fun.
Hired straight out of undergrad (thanks for the solid education, Truman State University!) in 2008 as the graphic designer for the department of Recreation Services & Facilities at the University of Missouri, I had no idea how much I would develop professionally and what a huge impact my experiences would have on my future. (And I'm not just talking about meeting my husband there...)
I had the unparalleled experience at working with some of the best professionals in the higher-education recreation industry, and as my superiors, they supported my growth, challenged my capacity for creativity, and gave me all the tools and resources I needed to become the well-rounded, driven, and professional creative I have become.
Lead in-house creative team of 10-12 professionals and students in various positions.
All publications, designs, apparel, installations, etc. followed brand standards and guidelines at the department and institution levels.
Equipment management and procurement for Mac computers, Canon DSLR camera equipment and accessories, EPSON large format printers, studio lighting.
Initiate regular meetings with department stakeholders to ascertain needs for the semester ahead. Develop department-wide marketing plan for the semester for 10+ sub-brands and stakeholders. Create assignments and delegate tasks for executing the marketing plan. Follow-up on a monthly or weekly basis with stakeholders. Repeat.
MizzouRec NATION magazine
Over 9 years, designed and/or art directed, managed content creation, followed through production process for 18 publications of MizzouRec NATION magazine. This comprehensive facility and program guide was a critical project for the department, both locally with students but also as a benchmark for excellent promotion within the collegiate recreation field.
Wayfinding project direction
Worked with ASI Signage to develop a 200+ sign facility-wide wayfinding and guidelines suite based on MizzouRec brand guidelines. Identified locations and content, determined content from facility operators and administrators and supervised installation.
Website redesign project direction
Worked with Delta Systems to create custom Wordpress template and integration with third-party member systems. All visual and written content created by myself or my team. Website maintenance
Event branding and design
All event collateral from programs to digital signage, photo backdrops, and recap video.
Alumni have gone on to internships with NASA, full-time positions in their field at the University and advanced positions at large publication companies in NYC.
The NATION standard
While primarily a tool to share information with on-campus students about the offerings within and around the complex, MizzouRec NATION magazine served many purposes during its nearly 20-years of publication. Team Mizzou student employees and MizzouRec members alike, were honored to be featured in the pages, fostering a deeper connection to their Third Space. Additionally, the distribution of the publication to key Rec directors, Athletic Directors, and Vice Chancellors within the SEC and Big 12, further served to support the positive reputation Mizzou and its valuing student recreation and the impact it has on the student body.
World's finest mindset
Through the leadership of executive director Diane Dahlmann from 1998-2017, the department I worked for had a clear focus on the mission, vision and values of the organization and, for a sustained period of time, I don't believe there was a harder working team than the professional staff of MizzouRec. The standards by which we were held, and the excellence to which we strived are both unmatched and always to be sought.
